Creative Reading Reward in First Grade

Reading is celebrated with gold at Rees Elementary School in Spanish Fork, Utah.  First grade has added a new element to the Road to Success Reading Program.  All first graders are asked to read at least 20 minutes every day of the week.  Each student then records their minutes they have read.  At the end of the week, their reading calendar is returned to their teacher.

Here’s where the challenge comes into play.  Each first grade class is competing against the others to see which class can read the most number of days.  Only the days where at least 20 minutes of reading occurred are counted toward the challenge.  At the end of the month, the winning class receives “The Golden Book” to remind them of their amazing success.  The winning class also receives a special reward.  The reward activity for the month of August was a one-sided water fight with the new principal of Rees Elementary, Mr. Ryan Pitcher.  Mr. Pitcher sat in a chair, not allowed to block the attack, while the first graders of the winning class threw a very wet sponge at him, therefore developing some “golden” memories.  The excitement from the students was overwhelming, and each class vowed that they would be the next winners.  Remember to read every day!
