UMPA Think Energy Presents to Rees Fifth Graders

Two representatives from UMPA (Utah Municipal Power Agency) delivered the Think Energy presentation to Rees fifth graders on November 9, 2011.  The presentation taught students about a wide range of important issues related to energy consumption.  They taught the difference between renewable and non-renewable sources of energy.  The students were amazed to learn that over 80% of Utah's energy comes from coal, a non-renewable source.  Utah uses very little renewable resources such as wind, solar, or hydro power.

The UMPA reps also explained ways that students could stop wasting energy.  There are little things like turning off the lights or not using major appliances between 2pm and 8pm.  But there were other surprises such as "energy vampires" like phone chargers that continue to use power even if they are just left plugged in.  Also, a shorter shower time could cut back on the energy needed to heat water.

At the end of the presentation, the students participated in a fun "Deal or No Deal" activity.  Contestants had to answer questions about energy in order to get the points inside their suitcase.  Ultimately, the students won over one million points!
